After World War II, NSU found themselves with factories that had been destroyed. But they were able to persevere and in 1952 they released the Max, one of the most popular quarter-liter bikes of the 50s – 97,120 bikes were sold.
Over its production run, the Max was released in 3 versions, including the standard shown here, the Special, and the Supermax. They also released the Sportmax, but that was a production racer. The ’54 Max had a 247cc single which produced 17 horsepower, enabling a top speed of 78 miles per hour. The base bike weighed 363 pounds – obviously this example weighs a bit more thanks to the beautiful Steib sidecar.
This specific NSU Max (VIN: 1274357) has 26,339 miles and has gone through, at the very least, a cosmetic restoration which included new paint, chrome, seats, luggage rack, and more.
