Post-Listing Update: Despite 18 bids up to $24,600, this Ducati 750SS did not meet reserve on eBay.
The Ducati 750SS (or Super Sport) is one of the most iconic motorcycles of the 70s, if not all time. Just 401 of the first year models were built, somewhat as a tribute to Ducati’s win at Imola in 197. It was the first example of desmo valves in the Ducati L-Twin for public consumption.
Paul Smart’s victory at Imola in 1972 cannot be overstated in importance for how it put Ducati on the map. The bike that victory inspired was noted by Cycle magazine as “a bike that stands at the farthest reaches of the sporting world – the definitive factory built cafe racer”. It put out 70 horsepower at 9,000 rpm, but the numbers are almost irrelevant when it comes to this classic.
This specific Ducati 750SS (Frame: 075028, Engine: 07510) is a “green-frame” model that was presumably repainted at some point. It’s never been registered for the road, and was raced by a Mr. Capellini who competed in the 1975 Italian Championship. It has an Imola kit, and was always maintained by the legendary NCR – invoices will come with the bike, as do historic race photos and the original homologation Ducati 750SS certificate. If I understand the story behind this bike correctly, that certificate implies this bike was one of the first 200 made.
