1992 BMW K75

I have to first apologize to Abhi. I volunteered to write for Bike-urious back in December and after a few posts got so busy with work that I was unable to continue. He was kind enough to allow me to come back though. Thank you, Abhi.

I noticed when I was doing this the first time, I seemed to have a “type”. I love low mileage BMWs that look like they just left the showroom floor. I sometimes cringe when I see airheads with Windjammer fairings. I usually wonder what the bike did wrong to deserve this cruel treatment. They remind me of the dogs in those late night ASPCA commercials.

I have a love affair with K75s. My dad still regrets the day we crashed our ’88 K75C. I’m pretty sure we’d still own it had that not happened. They seem to be the ultimate motorcycle for the old BMW demographic. And I don’t mean people that are old, I mean the people that bought BMWs before they were making the S1000RR. Commonly referred to as the Birkenstock of motorcycles, the K75 is a cult classic for BMW like the 2002 is for their car division. Many people on internet forums often joke that the odometer reads in scientific notation. They’re notoriously reliable, and maybe the smoothest bike BMW has ever made. This was the motorcycle that BMW meant to go head to head with another great bike, the VFR.

Prior to buying my R100GSPD, a bike that is the polar opposite of the K75, I had been looking for one but got discouraged. It seemed impossible to find a clean K75 without a lot of miles. Many up for sale look like they just left the new Mad Max set. They’ve been doing battle for years at a time and have the battle wounds to prove it. However, this is just a beautiful bike, and it’ll likely be a long time before you see one with so few miles. Many people would likely say that these bikes were meant to be ridden, and that having been used so little is a problem. I think you have to take the good with the bad though. I think buying one with more miles and trying to revert it to this condition would be much more expensive.
