Post Listing Update: This R12S did not meet reserve despite 25 bids up to $8,600.
For a few years, the R1200S was the sportiest boxer twin that BMW ever mass produced. While there was a lot to love about the bike, the oddball red/white striped paint scheme wasn’t necessarily one of them. Here’s a well-modified example that recently got a new paint job. The owner owns a McLaren dealership, so he went with the gorgeous McLaren color of Volcano Red.
The R12S featured a 1170cc, 122 horsepower boxer engine and it weighed just 430 pounds. At it’s core, it was the same engine as the R1200GS engine, but internal modifications gave it an extra 20+ horsepower. Those same modifications gave it the highest redline BMW had utilized on a boxer engine from the factory, at 8,800 rpm. In an effort to show the US that they were serious about selling a sports bike, BMW didn’t initally offer luggage as an option. But US buyers were eventually able to buy tank bags as well as the saddlebags available on the K1200R/S bikes. For more information, check out this write-up from Motorcycle-USA.
In addition to the paint job, this bike (VIN: WB10396077ZP30025) features carbon fenders, Ohlins suspension, Sandbar Composites headers, Akrapovic titanium muffler, Corbin seat, Helibars risers, Robby Moto rearsets, and an AF-XIED oxygen sensor calibrator. All of this work has been performed in 2016, less than 1,500 miles ago (the bike has a total of 6,300 miles on the odometer currently).
