Post-Sale Update: After 11 bids on eBay, this Ducati 999S Team USA did not meet reserve at $11,600.
The Ducati 999S Team USA was a very limited edition of the Italian firm’s superbike of the time. Built to commemorate Ducati’s participation in the AMA, this bike was unfortunately nothing more than a cosmetic package built surprisingly around the S, and not the 999R model.
What’s the difference, you ask? In the world of Ducati’s, the “R” designation represents the top of the line. In previous years, Ducati race replicas were usually based on the R – like the Xerox, Bayliss, or Fila replicas. Even though the actual Parts Unlimited bike had factory support and utilized R engines, this replica was mechanically identical to the S, and instead got custom graphics and a signature on the tail. Our nitpicking aside, the S model still gets you some wonderful factory equipment, like Ohlins front and rear, more horsepower, radial brakes, and the $3,000 Termi exhaust.
This specific Ducati 999S Team USA is a “one owner” bike that has just 479 miles, quoted as it was recently taken in on a trade. The seller is a Ducati collector that you’d probably want to be friends with – photos show several rare Ducs parked in some sort of game room. The bike is completely stock, and has no cosmetic defects. With just 150 examples made, the seller claims that this would make a wise investment. We’re not so sure, due to the S/R differentiation explained above. Still – this bike is definitely a looker!
