Post-Listing Update: The opening bid on this 999R was reduced to $15,000 but it still got no action.
Designed by Pierre Terblanche, the Ducati 999R (and the regular 999 it was based on) was met with mixed reviews with regards to the exterior styling when it was first released. But no one can deny the success that Ducati had in WSB and AMA racing with the 999R. To comply with AMA homologation rules, the states got 300 examples of the zenith of Ducati road bike technology at the time.
With a staggering MSRP of $29,995, some wondered if the 999R was worth the $7,000 premium over the 999S. Well, it was. While they shared the same race spec Ohlins suspension and radial brakes, the R got an incredible race-bred engine with a larger bore, new head design, and titanium valves. At the time, it was the most powerful production V-Twin motor ever – pushing 134.1 horsepower and 76.5 lb-ft at the rear wheel. No matter how you slice it, this was the ultimate track weapon to buy, though with limited numbers, it’s tough to see someone buying a collectible and treating it the way it deserves.
This specific Ducati 999R is part of an extensive Ducati collection, and is being offered by the second owner. We like that it’s actually been ridden a bit – the second owner has put nearly all the current 7,613 miles on himself. You’ll get upgrades to the rear hugger and sprocket, but it’s otherwise stock – you’ll even get the rear wheel stand and silk cover. One of our loyal readers recently purchased a Ducati Paul Smart from this seller, and was quite happy with the bike he received. Look for a feature on that exact bike in the near future!
