1-25-2014 Update: 4 months later, this Triumph TSX is back up for sale, and for some reason the opening bid is $1,000 higher. Find it here on eBay with an opening bid of $7,500
The Triumph TSX was designed as a custom ‘West-Coast’ styled Bonneville. A last ditch effort to boost lagging sales, this custom bike took the mechanicals from the T140, changed up the cosmetics, and somewhat copied the Yamaha XS650 in the process. But the Triumph was much cooler, and the interesting cosmetics and plenty of chrome didn’t hurt, either.
The changes were relatively small, but there were plenty of them. The chassis was lowered, made possible thanks to a smaller rear wheel and an off-set engine. The TSX got a stepped seat, black finished engine, shortened painted mudguards, short megaphone exhausts, and stick on graphics, among many other unique features. Upgrades included double Brembo discs, and a kickstarter. The Triumph TSX was supposed to be sold for several more years, but production ended when Triumph went bankrupt in August of 1983.
This specific Triumph TSX is one of the rarer Midnight Black units (approximately 33% of the 371 were black, as opposed to Gypsy Red). 100 of the 371 created were sold to the US. This bike somehow only has 620 miles on it, as it’s been kept in a garage for the last 30 years. It’s being offered for sale by the second owner, and comes with the original handbook, toolkit, and a plaque from a recent show victory.
