Post-Sale Update: This SRX250 sold for $1,875 after 4 bids on eBay.
For decades, Kawasaki ruled the 250cc ‘sport’bike market – though Honda has recently taken a chunk of the market with their CBR250R. Honda also challenged the little Ninja in the 80s with the VTR250, though it did not have much commercial success. For one year in the States, even the big blue threw their hat into the ring with the Yamaha SRX250.
Powered by 250cc single-cylinder 4 stroke engine, the SRX pushed out 17 horsepower and was able to rev up to 9,000 rpm. The styling is definitely 80s, but we think it’s quite appropriate in this situation. Note the position of the seat release lock and the fact that it has a fuel gauge! Fancy stuff for a 25 year old 250cc. Unfortunately, bodywork is hard to find for these – such a limited sales run means that Yamaha never made parts availability a priority. In addition, because they were beginner bikes, many were trashed or neglected. Want more information? Check out someone’s fan page for the Yamaha SRX250, one of the very few out there.
This specific Yamaha SRX250 appears to be one of the few that was taken car of. Everything claims to work correctly, and it’s only covered about 10,000 miles over the last 26 years. If you’re looking for a little slice of 80s styling, with color-matched wheels and seats, this might just be the bike for you. To our untrained eyes, the rear tire looks to be skinnier than the front, though it might just be our eyes playing tricks on us as the wheel diameters are different sizes. We’d make sure you double check that before pulling the trigger.
