As the ides of March pass us by, my hope is that you’re busy planning a lengthy motorcycle trip for the summer. Reader Chris H. sent me a link to this post from MotoQuest, which will hopefully inspire some of you to take the long road up to the top of Alaska!
Phil Freeman is the founder and lead guide for MotoQuest. He’s ridden the Dalton Highway over 10 times, so I think it’s a fair assumption that he knows what he’s talking about. My girlfriend gifted me his book, The Adventurous Motorcyclist’s Guide to Alaska
, before our trip to the top of Alaska (click here if you haven’t enjoyed that ride report yet!) and I found it to be very helpful.
I got lucky with my trip in the middle of June – the Dalton was in relatively good shape and I never really felt like I was in danger. That’s why I say the list sometimes paints a bleak picture, but it’s best to be prepared! For the 10 dos and don’ts, click here. Personally, the tip that rings truest for me is the comment that your bike will never be the same once you do this trip because you’ll get mud/calcium chloride up into nooks and crannies and you’ll never be able to clean it properly!
This bike-uriousity brought to you by Chris H. Now get planning for your own trip!
