Between 1983 and 1985, BMW built a limited edition of their R65. Called the R65LS, it featured a polarizing front fairing that probably makes the bike look faster than the bike actually was. I dig the 80s look…you may not. This example has spent the last 28 years under a cloth cover in a heated basement, so it hasn’t covered very many miles.
Functionally, there isn’t much difference between the BMW R65LS and the bike it’s based on. You still got the 50 horsepower boxer twin – the only mechanical difference was an upgrade to dual disc Brembos on the front wheel. The major cosmetic difference is obviously the front fairing. This example (VIN: 6371549) has some cosmetic issues (let’s just call it patina) but the seller says that the mechanical components run excellent. When the seller found the bike, he/she decided to leave the cosmetics alone and just focus on making sure the bike ran well. To that end, they installed a new battery, coil, spark plugs, brake pads/fluid, and fuel lines. They rebuilt both carbs, set the valves to spec, and apparently replaced all fluids in the engine, transmission, driveshaft, and final drive twice. Note that the left case has a crack on the top.
