12 Miles – 2002 Ducati MH900E

Post Listing Update: This Ducati did not meet reserve with just one bid at $22,000.

I’ve covered plenty of examples of the MH900E before, but this one has just 12 miles on it. Originally a sketch from the legendary Pierre Terblanche, Ducati got plenty of positive feedback and decided to post a survey on their website to see if its passionate fans would actually buy a production version. 300 people said yes, so Ducati decided to build…2000 (half in the year 2000, and the other half in 2001 – though some of the later ones were titled in 2002). Continuing the website-based theme, Ducati offered the bikes for sale online – the first time any motorcycle manufacturer sold directly to the consumer. The first 1,000 bikes sold out in 31 minutes.

The MH900e used the engine from a 900SS (75 horsepower) but the lower gearing and fuel injection from a Monster 900, helping acceleration figures. A couple of interesting features did not make the jump from concept to production, including exhaust-integrated rear turn signals and a rearview camera/display. Owners were given a matching red paddock stand, plaque, and t-shirt, all of which incorporated the production number of their specific bike.

Again, this bike (#1915 out of 2000) has just 12 miles. It’s still on the MSO as it’s never been titled – the seller claims it’s in “brand new condition.” The bike has spent its life on display in a home office. It comes with the sides of the original crate, plaque, stand, manuals, and the t-shirt. Note that it will need a new battery. Or…as reader Zack B points out, a company called StradaFab is in the planning stages of creating replica MH900e frames in either chromoly or titanium. Maybe it’ll inspire you to create even crazier bodywork than Terblanche did…
