16k Miles – 1989 BMW R100 GS

The BMW R100 GS was the bike that broke open the mold for BMW. While the R80GS was the first of this new category of bikes, the R100 updated everything and sold over 34,000 units. The best way to sum up this bike would probably be in the words of my mechanic, who calls it a “pavement-indifferent” touring bike.

The flat-twin boxer engine was good for 60 horsepower, pushing the 455 pound bike up to 112 miles per hour. Of course, these bikes were never about top speed, but instead about being a big trailie that could handle most of the terrain you could find. Check out this article from Motorcycle Classics if you want to learn more about this history and success of the R100GS.

BMW R100 GS - Cockpit

This specific BMW R100 GS (VIN: WB1047805J6152031) has just 16,192 miles. It’s un-restored and it looks great despite some scratches. The only aftermarket part is the hand guards, and everything mechanical is claimed to work. The seller acquired this to turn into a Paris-Dakar replica but he feels it’s too nice to do so. Hopefully the new owner chooses to keep it original as well!
