It’s not red, but many Ducati fans consider the 750SS to be the firm’s most iconic motorcycle of all time. That’s why the asking price for this not-100% original example is well into six figures. But what will the sale price be?
A tribute to the bikes that finished first and second at Imola in 1972, the 750SS was a hand built and highly desirable instant classic. Just 401 examples were built, all with a distinctive green frame. For more information on this motorcycling legend, check out this write-up by Ducati Classics.
This example (Engine #: 075318 DM750.1, Frame #: DM750SS 075061) is relatively original but the seller notes that there are plenty of items that are not correct. In addition to a 20+ year old restoration that included a paint job, this bike has later 40mm Dell’orto carbs, Tomaselli Daytona throttle, and Marzocchi rear shocks. The headlamp bracket was painted green but it left the factory in satin black. Both front fairing brackets have been cut down so they only accept one bolt instead of two. The original Scarab front master cylinder has been replaced with a Brembo unit but it is included. The rear cylinder has a broken fin, and there’s a few more things detailed in the listing. Despite all this, the bike is said to be in excellent mechanical condition.
The seller notes that “prices are going nuts on these” and that you should “buy now or be priced out of the market forever.” He might be right, but with an asking price of $190K he’s only talking to a very select group of people.
