Though I think this bike is quite the looker, the Indian 437 Sport was not received well by the press, who considered it to be uglier and just plain worse than the rest of the Indian line-up.
Looks are subjective, but the the reason why the press considered this bike to be worse has to do with an engineering decision Indian made in 1936. Normally, the intake valve is an top of the motor, but Indian decided to place the hotter exhaust valves on top so that they could get cool air. In the process, it picked up the nickname, “Upside Down Four.” While this did help cool the exhaust valves down, it also brought lots of heat up towards the rider’s thighs. The Sport was designed to go faster and be more reliable. And while both of those ended up happening, the market didn’t care for it. Just a few hundred were built, making them a rare find nowadays.
This specific Indian 437 Sport is part of the Grom Motorcycle Museum’s collection. Never heard of it? That makes two of us. But it’s in Slovenia and it’s got some fantastic motorcycles as part of the collection. It was restored by Ken Young and…well, it’s museum quality!
