Post-Listing Update: This 438 did not meet reserve with bidding up to $64,850 on eBay.
One of the most famous Indians, the Indian Four 438 is a descendant of the Ace motorcycles that Indian purchased in 1927. Some consider this to be the finest Indian ever built.
The 438 was built for just one year, and it produced 45 horsepower from the 1,265cc engine. The power was pushed through a three speed transmission and was capable of pushing the bike up to 95 miles per hour. Only approximately 300 were made.
This specific Indian Four 438 comes from the collection of motorcycle expert Harry V. Sucher, an individual who was all about finding, restoring, and riding antique bikes. He wrote several books about Indian and Harley, and was one of the early members of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America. This bike was actually picture in some of his books, and is said to originally have been a CHP bike. Restored by Johnny Eagles in the 70s, it sat in storage until a recent service and tune-up.
