I got a brand new 26” Schwinn Bicycle for Christmas when I was 10 years old. By the time summer that year I was agitating for an auxiliary motor for it. I already knew the freedom that a Whizzer could provide. It is probably my earliest dream of being a motorcyclist.
Made in Shelby, Ohio, the Shelby Bicycles were considered leading edge for their styling. This pre-WWII model clearly shows why. The Whizzer model H motor kit was built from March 1946 to 1948. The Model H had several big improvements including one piece crankcase, roller bearing crank and improved seals. The model H would prove to be Whizzer’s most popular kit ever, and produced around 2.5 HP.
This Shelby Whizzer is said to be a fully restored unit from a private collection in Long Beach, CA. Price is $5,500 and is available here on Cycle Trader. In my research, I have found the same cycle to have been for sale on at least a couple of other venues. The price seems to be trending down.
