Post Sale Update: After 12 bids on eBay, this Gilera sold for $3,300.
Founded in 1909, Gilera is one of Italy’s oldest motorcycle manufacturers. Despite a long history with some serious racing pedigree, Gilera now lives on as part of the Piaggio group, their logo only being slapped on a few scooters. Let’s ignore the sad current state of affairs and go back to Gilera’s heyday of the 50s – during that decade they won their only top class MotoGP championships, but they won 6 of them! Gileras street bikes were similarly accomplished, and the 150 motor was one of the most popular. It doesn’t hurt that it’s absolutely gorgeous in a simple, no-frills way.
This example (VIN: 181-9253) has an impressive 24,838 miles on the odometer (it actually reads 39,741 kilometers). The seller acquired it with the intent of restoring it, but after spending some time with the bike he wisely decided the patina was worth keeping. The only cosmetic retouching was a repaint of the muffler and some touchups on the frame. In general, the condition of the paint and chrome is as you’d expect for a bike that’s 64 years old. The seller says that everything works but the tires are old and should be replaced. The bike is missing the original key and it will take two weeks before a California title can be supplied – if you believe the seller, it’s in process. I question why the seller wouldn’t just wait to have the title in hand before selling the bike, but what do I know?
