In 1951, Zundapp introduced their last big bike – the KS601 (Kardan Sport). It got plenty of positive attention from the press, but Zundapp’s sales couldn’t compete with offerings from BMW. To combat this they expanded to a Sport model (with 34 horsepower, 6 up from the standard) and even offered multiple colors. The press felt that the bike was a better handler than BMWs 600cc twin, but Americans associated Zundapp with sidecar rigs and the KS601 never caught on.
For more specs on the KS601, check out Zundapp Fool. This example (VIN: 554064) has 26,051 miles on the odometer and it was restored in the early ’90s. Said restoration included an engine rebuild and a repaint of the frame and bodywork. It was then stored for 22 years until the current seller acquired it. He/she cleaned the fuelt tank, rebuilt the carbs, installed a new battery, and then brought the bike to life. Everything is claimed to work though you’ll want to replace the tires before you get this bike back on the road. It’s not perfect cosmetically – there’s some aging of the chrome, a few small chipsin the paint, surfact rust on wheel spokes, and a dent in the front fender. Still, this is a rare find that’s almost ready to ride.
