1959 Cushman Highlander – Or Not?

In America, Scooter by Tom WackerLeave a Comment

The Cushman company was created in 1903 in Lincoln, Nebraska and in 1913 they incorporated as Cushman Motor Works. The company built engines for pumps, farm equipment, lawn mowers and boats, most notably their ‘Husky’ brand. A strategy for survival in the Great Depression the company began making scooters in 1936 and continued until 1966. OMC (Outboard Marine Corp) acquired Cushman in the late 50’s.

This scooter is definitely based on a model 721 Highlander from Cushman Motor Works. The original would have had an 8 HP kick start motor with a top speed of around 60 MPH. This one has a 9 HP electric start motor that I believe is a much later OMC OHV model that could make it considerably faster than the original.

This Cushman Highlander (VIN# 07128) is in Glendale, AZ and is listed as a complete custom restored. It has lots of Highlander in it, but quite a little that is not stock Cushman. The rear fender is pure Highlander, and is fiberglass. It is a gorgeous piece, but would never stand to a dedicated Cushman fan. The scooter has a starting price of $3,495
