Post Listing Update: This Motobi did not meet reserve with 10 bids up to $3,450.
After some disagreements with his family, Giuseppe Benelli created Moto ‘B’ Pesaro in 1949. He soon changed the name to Motobi, and the company quickly became known for small bikes with competition pedigree. The Catria was introduced in 1955 in 125cc and 175cc four stroke options with the instant classic “Power Egg” motor.
The 175 (actually 172cc) motor was good for 18 horsepower and a top speed just shy of 70 miles per hour. Despite the relatively small size, this bike was equipped with a hefty 4.8 gallon fuel tank. For more on the Catria, check out this March 1962 review from Cycle World, which notes that the price was $569 in New York or $585 on the West Coast.
This example is far from stock, and it’s modified to race with custom bodywork, revised gearing, a larger front brake, forks and clipons from a later model, and removal of the starter. The seller states that it is quite fast for a 50s 175 and that he is no longer capable of bump starting bikes so he’s letting it go.
