Post Sale Update: This Panther sold for $10,000 after 33 bids on eBay.
Introduced way back in 1932, the Panther Model 100 kept evolving until 1963, by which point the Model 120 had taken over. Both models featured the distinctive “Sloper” motor, named for the angle that is so evident at a side view. The 598cc single produced 23 horsepower, which was good for a top speed of 70 miles per hour. 1954 introduced a swingarm, four gallon fuel tank, and Panther forks to the Model 100, which was well suited for a sidecar – Phelon & Moore, the parent company that built these bikes, estimated that 90% of the Model 100s were used with a third wheel!
In 1959, the motor was bored out from 594cc to 645cc as the Model 100 became the Model 120 – so I’d verify with the seller why he says his Model 100 is from 1961. For more on the Panther, check out this buyer’s guide from Sump Publishing, which the bike is referred to “competent, if…not exactly inspiring mounts.”
This example was acquired the by the seller in non-running condition but he fixed it up with a new fuel tank, handlebars, switchgear, brakes, and tires. The original steel fender has been replaced with a fiberglass version in the past. As this is a Deluxe model, it’s equipped with a magneto and dynamo, and both are said to work well. The seller notes that the motor leaks a little oil “like many older British bikes.”
