The Chimera was a bit ahead of its time – despite rarely seen features (for the time) like a single rear shock and the futuristic styling, Aermacchi was only able to sell 119 examples of the 175cc variant and 177 examples of the 250cc. Here’s a rare example of the latter that’s in the US.
By 1960, Aermacchi and H-D were in bed together but this bike was not officially exported to the US. The 250cc engine was developed in hopes of boosting sales – though it did not work, that motor would evolve into what was found in more successful machines like the Ala Verde, Ala Rosso, and Ala d’Oro. It’s got very distinctive lines which pay homage to Aermacchis history as an aircraft manufacturer. For more information on the Chimera check out this profile from Motorcycle Classics.
This example is part of the Michael Harper collection, it “runs and rides well” and includes a framed copy of the originan Italian title and the original tax disc. Find this Chimera for sale in Tarzana, California with a BIN of $18,200 or best offer here on eBay.
