Post Sale Update: This Metralla sold for $5,901 after 14 bids on eBay.
Spanish for ‘shrapnel’, the Metralla was one of the most famous motorcycles to come out of Spain. The regular Mk2 model is rare enough, but Bultaco also offered a “Kit America” – a race package with a different tank, tail, handlebars, and a tweaked engine that made it nearly peerless on the race track. This Kit America-equipped Metralla shows potential but it’s obviously going to need some work before it hits the track again.
The kit also included a close ratio transmission – for more on the differences that made up the Kit America, check out Progress is Fine.
The seller of this example (VIN: M2300696) has owned it for almost 30 years, he says “it was going to be my weekend AHRMA race bike in the day” – I really hope my CB160 doesn’t suffer a similar fate. He was apparently quite a Bultaco nut who at one time owned 50 of them. The seller guesses that it’s either a late ’66 or early ’67 bike due to the VIN, he “believes” the engine was rebuilt in Lynn Mobley’s shop 30 years ago “but my memory is a bit vague as I did have four of these bikes as well as four of the 200cc Mk1s.” He calls it a project that is 90% complete. He notes that it’s missing the tool box, switches, and peripheral electronics, among other things. This is going to take some time and effort but it will be one of the coolest things as your local vintage track day. Who’s up for the challenge?

If you’re more of a dirt guy, the seller also has a Rickman Metisse with a Bultaco 250 engine that also needs some work but is closer to being done, it’s got an unmet opening bid of $2,800 here on eBay.
