Post-Sale Update: After 40 bids on eBay, this Impala Sport sold for $7,200.
The Impala 175 was introduced in 1962 and produced just 10.5 horsepower because Montesa wanted to ensure the bike was reliable – the factory decided to prove that by sending three bikes through Africa, covering 12,500 miles in the process. A Sport version was released, which pushed 18 ponies. Then in ’66, Montesa shoved a 250 engine into the Impala Sport, and riders were rewarded with 26 horsepower. Let’s get one of those!
Previous generations of the Impala were dual-sports, though the Sport 250 was more of a street bike. Either way, it’s a lovely bike that represented a great bang for the buck at the time. For more on the Impala, check out this retrospective from Rider magazine.
This example was restored about a decade ago and has approximately 600 miles since – most of which came on a 3 day, 400 miles ride. The seller says everything has held up well from the restoration except for chrome on the exhaust. Everything works and it looks great – I think that’s a beautiful color combination.
