1967 Yamaha YR-1 Grand Prix

Here’s a first year example of the Yamaha Grand Prix, also known as the YR-1. It was the biggest bike in their line up, and Yamaha’s first 350cc production engine. Despite the relative diminutive size, this bike was highly competitive with British 650s. Thanks to a chassis and engine that was suitable from road racing from the factory, it was a great bike that evolved into iconic 2-stroke Yamahas like the R5, RD350, and more.

This bike actually represented a lot of firsts for Yamaha – instead of cast iron cylinders, it has aluminum cylinders with cast iron sleeves. It was the first Yammie motor with a horizontally split crank case, as well. For more on the Grand Prix, check out this post on Classic Jap Cycles.

This example (VIN: R1-08648) has several NOS parts – the battery, tank badges, headlight bezel, and more. The seat has been reupholstered and the carbs were cleaned. The seller says it runs well and that you “must see to believe” it. Find this YR-1 for sale here on Craigslist for $3,200 in Arvada, Colorado.
