Bultaco is best known for off-road motorcycles, but the Metralla was an international legend when it was released at it was the fastest two-stroke bike you could buy. The Metralla produced 32 horsepower at a time when many automobiles were making less!
The Mk2 Metralla was in production until 1975, and it’s now a cult classic in the US. It weighed 250 pounds and the MSRP was $600. It’s absolutely gorgeous – confirmed by the fact that it was featured in the Guggenheim’s Art of the Motorcycle Exhibit.
“Riding it is like throwing a smoke bomb into a hornets’ nest, then climbing on. Every time I ride the bike, I think to myself, ‘Really? Guys rode these skinny-tired, drum-braked, springy-suspensioned things in anger?’ Major respect for those brave souls who had no idea what sport bikes would be like a scant 25 years later.”
– Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car, April 2010.
This Metralla (VIN: B2300800) has 2,177 miles on the odometer, though there’s no guarantee that the number is accurate. The engine has 450 miles on it after a rebuild and is claimed to run properly. The rest of the bike was restored as well – the bodywork was repainted with decals under a urethane clear coat. The oil pump has been rebuilt but the seller has left it disconnected and runs premix instead. The only issues seems to be some minor cracking in some of the rubber parts.
