It’s early March 1967. Our basketball team had qualified for the State Tournament and I had 4 days in the big city with nothing to do except one game per day. Much of my ‘unsupervised’ time was spent looking at motorcycles (I was already hopeless). JC Penney, Western Auto, Montgomery Wards and Sears ALL had motorcycles on display. Not to mention all the motorcycle dealers.

One of the best of them was the Sears offerings, directly made by Puch and imported to the US as the Allstate brand. Called the Twingle because it was a two piston, single cylinder two stroke arrangement. One piston for the intake and combustion, the other for exhaust. The result was very good fuel economy and a small uptick in low speed torque. The down side was weight gain and complexity.

The Puch had a typical European set up. Kick starter and rear brake on the left side, shifter under the right foot. 248 cc (15.1 cid) rated at 16 horsepower. Wet weight of 342 pounds the Puch boasted 71 mpg with a top speed of 68 mph.
