Post Listing Update: This Scrambler was pulled off of eBay, final sale price unknown.
Ducati of the ‘60s and ‘70s had a history of being between extreme financial peril and a rosy business outlook. The Scrambler series was conceived and delivered during one deep, dark period of potential business failure and had a significant impact on the very next period of ‘rosy outlook’.
By 1968 the dirt bike market was strong world wide and had gone completely berserk in the US. Everything that remotely looked like it might be good in the dirt sold well. Ducati was perfectly positioned with the beautiful Scrambler series that were introduced in 1962 with the 250 and completely reworked in 1968. Ducati brought the 450 CC Scrambler to the market in 1969 with their largest single and chassis input from the road racing program.
The 1969 Ducati 450 Scrambler used a 436 CC air cooled four stroke single overhead cam single cylinder motor that made 27 HP with a five speed transmission and wet weight of right at 300 LBS. Good brakes with great suspension and frame along with the Ducati style made a very attractive package.
This Duc is a nice example with some upgrades to make it more rideable. The listing says ‘starts easily’ which was never a selling point of the originals. The original had a matched speedo/tach cluster which this bike does not have. If you are looking for a pristine example of an original 450 scrambler, this isn’t quite it. If you are looking for a great, rideable example this bike is probably priced just on the high side of fair market value. It is a first year bike.
This particular 1969 Ducati 450 Scrambler (VIN# 4502587) is in Portland, Oregon and is listed as ‘a beautiful example of Ducati’s original scrambler’. The bike has a starting bid of $7,500
