Post Listing Update: This Interceptor did not meet reserve despite 6 bids up to $7,400 in Stony Plain, Alberta, Canada.
Restored between 2010 and 2012, this Interceptor is believed to be one of just 1,122 examples built before the Royal Enfield plant in England shut down in June of 1970. R-E recently announced that they’re bringing back the Interceptor as a 650 twin for next year. I was randomly chatting with a representative of Royal Enfield North America who told me that it unfortunately will have to be given a different official name (like INT650) because Honda now owns “Interceptor”.
That’s truly a shame, because Interceptor is such a great name. The original model featured a tuned version of RE’s biggest engine at the time and they were only sold in the US and Canada – as a ’69 model, this is a MkII, which Norton forks and brakes as well as an upgrade to wet sump lubrication. The bike weighed about 410 pounds wet and was motivated by a 736cc engine. For more on the Interceptor, check out this write-up on Motorcycle Classics where they call it “British motorcycling’s best kept secret”.
The previously-mentioned restoration work on this example (VIN: F1299) includes a powdercoated frame, “engine and gearbox overhaul” performed by Motoparts, Inc, new wiring, ceramic coating of the exhaust, and a few aftermarket goodies such as turn signals, electronic ignition, and upgraded air filters.
