1970s BMW “Poor Man’s Paris Dakar” Custom

In Custom, Dual-Sport, Germany by AbhiLeave a Comment

This bike is going to need an engine as the current one is seized, but as the seller notes – that would be the “easiest component to replace” considering the extent of the modifications! The seller built this himself roughly 30 years ago to put up with “hard desert riding” and it’s one of the cooler custom BMW’s I’ve seen in a while.

Doesn’t show the bike very well, but it hopefully gets you dreaming of what could be again!

It has a KTM front end with 11″ of travel and Works Performance rebuildable shocks with 9.5″ inches of travel in the rear. Seat height is a staggering 38″, and the seller says, “it can be lowered, buy why?” When the 6.5 gallon fuel tank is full, the bike weighs approximately 425 pounds. The core frame is off a 1970 /5, though it’s obviously been heavily braced. The seller says he’s too old for it now and that he has “to sell it before I die and the wife throws it and all the other BMW crap away.” I have to admit, I’m entertained by his attitude and skills.
