1971 Honda Trail CT70

Sometimes you can’t resist a bad idea. Spending thousands of dollars on a 53-year-old vehicle that fits in your closet is, probably, a bad idea. But when the vehicle in question is a Honda Trail CT70, is it really that bad of an idea? After all, some bad ideas can be a whole lot of fun.

The Trail CT70 was a 72cc minibike sold exclusively in the United States and Canada from 1969 to 1982 (it lasted until 1986 in Canada). When I say “exclusively,” what I mean is that it went by a different name everywhere else; in most other parts of the world it was known as the ST70 Dax. Depending on the model, the bikes were equipped with a three-speed semiautomatic transmission, or a four-speed manual transmission. This shining example is one of the former.

Capable of 6 horsepower, these things are ideal for tearing around the woods behind your grandad’s house. If you’re a little too old for that sort of thing, it’s an excellent gift to give your daughter or son, so they can experience the life-affirming joy of broken bones. A quirky feature of the Trail CT70 is that it has folding handlebars. So, if there aren’t any woods behind your grandad’s house you can chuck this thing in the back of a car/truck and go find some.

This particular example is in surprisingly good shape. To the extent that I wonder if you’d really want to go tearing around in anybody’s woods. In my mind that kind of counts against it. After all, this is effectively a toy (that is more than half a century old). I’d be looking to knock a fair chunk off the $3,500 asking price. Still, the seller promises that it, “Runs great, rides smooth,” which is essentially what you want from a motorcycle.
