Post-Listing Update: This Maico 501 was pulled off of eBay, final sale price unknown.
One of the most sought-after vintage MX bikes of all time, the Maico 501 was released in 1971 and dropped jaws just because of the displacement. At the time, it was the biggest two-stroke speed junkies could buy.
The 400s were actually better race bikes, but for some people it was impossible to argue with 501cc. If you want more information, head on over to my favorite Maico reference, the “Ultimate Maico Vintage Bike Guide” from Rick Sieman at Off-Road.com.
This specific Maico 501 has been with the current owner for 30 years, who bought it after a kid apparently talked his parents into buying it and then promptly put himself in the hospital. The parents then put the bike away until the owner snapped it up back in ’84. It was stock but needed a good ‘going over’. The seller isntalled a NOS seat, air filter, and tires, and has been used very sparingly since. This is not going to be cheap!
