In the early 70s, an aspiring Floyd Clymer (who owned the name of Indian Motorcycles at the time) thought that the 736cc engine from the Mark II Royal Enfield Interceptor was an absolute jewel, and he ordered 200 to use in an hybrid sport-tourer to be created as Indians. Unfortunately, Clymer passed away after only approximately 15 were created, leaving a surplus of engines that the Rickman brothers saw as an opportunity. Fast forward a couple of months, and you get the Rickman Enfield Interceptor, an all British sportbike featuring the excellent engine with the racing frame that Rickman was known for. Just 136 were produced, meaning they’re quite hard to find, and very valuable.
The result was an absolute beauty, with a nickel-plated chrommoly frame, front and rear disc brakes, Ceriani Forks, and Smith instruments, resulting in a package that weighed 365 pounds and could comfortably cruise at 90 mph all day. As a little bonus, we found a few vintage ads for the Rickman Enfield Interceptor on Access Norton, so enjoy:
This specific Rickman Enfield Interceptor has stayed within one family after being purchased directly from the exclusive dealer, Elite Motors in London. It was enjoyed a bit in England and Spain, then shipped to the US, and it’s only covered 1500 miles over its lifetime. It sat for about 30 years, but still starts and runs well enough. Invest a bit with a RE expert to get this up to snuff, and you’ll have an irreplaceable (and barely-known) British classic. Plus, it’s named Interceptor! We maintain that Interceptor is the greatest name for any vehicle, ever. (That might not be a reason to actually buy a vehicle, though).
