During the 60s and 70s, Yamaha offered racing versions of its street bikes for use by privateers and even Yamaha factory racers. The classic R5 provided the base for the Yamaha TR3, a David among goliaths that was the first 2-stroke (and smallest bike at the time) to ever win the Daytona 200.
The engine is a 350cc air-cooled twin that produced 54 horsepower. This was sufficient to get the 220 pound bike over 140 miles per hour. For more information, check out this article from Motorcycle Classics about a restored ’72 model.
This specific Yamaha TR3 is a numbers matching that was imported from Europe after a two-year build, which included the custom paint job.
