John Penton and KTM are well tied into each other – going back to 1968 when Penton funded KTM’s research to build some prototype bikes. Thous prototypes eventually became 100cc Berkshires which started KTM’s success in the US. In 1973, the Penton Hare Scrambler was introduced as a bigger, better variant.
The 250cc KTM engine was new for ’73, and it was combined with a six speed transmission, Akront wheels, Motoplat ignition, a chrome moly frame and 35mm Ceriani forks. The enduro version had a MSRP of $1,575 and weighed 220 pounds. For more information on the Hare Scrambler, check out this write-up from Hemmings.
This specific Penton Hare Scrambler (VIN: 740012175) is mostly original and comes with new grips, seat cover, and front fender. The rear fender is a Preston Petty MX unit. The chrome has some cosmetic issues, and the rear shock will need to be replaced before you take this Hare Scrambler out on some trails. It has been stored dry in a private collection so you may need to clean the carb.
