You may have seen recently that Kawasaki is bringing two-strokes back. Whether it is promising a street bike (probably not) or something more off-road focused is uncertain.
It’s been quite a while since two-stroke engines featured in street bikes. Even 52 years ago, when this GT550 was produced, it was clear that the end was nigh. Or, well, it was clear to some manufacturers. Whereas Honda and Kawasaki were leaning into the four-stroke revolution, Suzuki was holding fast to this tried and true engine configuration.
The GT550 was sold from 1972-1977. Its relatively unstressed 543 cc three-cylinder engine delivered a claimed peak power output of 50 horsepower, which Suzuki said was enough to propel bike and rider upward of 110 mph. The powerplant was paired with a long wheelbase to create a model that was ostensibly aimed at the touring gentleman (and gentlewoman).
The bike featured a rami-air intake and was so functional and reliable that some owners felt it lacked character. But how can you say that a bike painted pea green is completely free of character? This particular example has spent many of its years sitting inside an air-conditioned motorcycle dealership. To remedy the issues that inactivity creates, the bike has recently had a fair bit of work done to the engine, including a rebuilt crankshaft.
With 7,090 miles on the clock, this GT550 is for sale for $11,250 in Oregon City, Oregon, here on eBay.
