The Commando name actually spans 6 different models: the Roadster, Fastback, Hi-Rider, Production Racer, Interpol, and the Interstate. The Interstate is today’s featured bike, and you can probably guess from the name that it was designed to be a long distance tourer. The 828cc variant was released in 1973, adn the main difference from the base bike was the large (approximately 6 gallon) fuel tank. Norton also offered optional saddlebags, fairing, and luggage rack but those are hard to find nowadays.
Another change from the base bike was the “full size buddy seat.” Norton advertised the Interstate by saying “There can’t now be a Superbike more suitable for long range riding…with its arrogant good looks, unique vibration-free Isolastic construction, dynamic perfromance and ultimate roadability.”
Last registered in 1993 (according to the license plate), this Commando (VIN: F111040) is said to have been through a full inspection and it’s ‘running, detailed, and ready for the road.’ It sitll has the break-in instruction sticker on the speedometer, and the fenders still have the rubber mud flaps.
