Post Sale Update: After 72 bids on eBay, this TZ750 sold for $39,000.
A legend in motorcycle racing, a Yamaha TZ750 won the Daytona 200 nine times in a row and was called one of the six greatest motorcycles of all time by Cycle World. Here’s an example that’s spent over 30 years in storage after a brief stint in racing. For more on what made this bike such a legend, check out this profile from SuperbikePlanet.
According to the seller, this bike was imported to Los Angeles with the first batch of TZ750As for the ’74 racing season. It was raced by Denny Fox and Bill Betts, and then put into temperature controlled storage. It’s a numbers matching bike and it was restored to original condition with the exception of: non-matching brake hoses and a different exhaust pipe support design as the original was ‘troublesome’. Everything is claimed to have been professionally painted but the seller says it’s not a 100% restoration become some fasteners are non-Yamaha and some rubber pieces (grips, pegs, etc) were left unrestored to give the bike a “previously raced appearance.” Despite all the cosmetic work and that the seller says the engine compression, gear selection, and clutch operation are normal, he has never had the engine running. Expect to put some work into this, buty ou’ll have an incredibly cool vintage racer by the time it’s all over.
