I adore the BMW R90S, which was a game-changer when it was released to the world. The gray and smoke paint scheme shown here was the first of two available paint schemes, both of which are beautiful and incredibly difficult to reproduce. With oversight from Hans Muth, this bike was built to show the world that BMW could make more than just touring bikes for old guys. Reg Pridmore helped soldify that claim with a first place finish in the first ever AMA Superbike Championship series in 1976.
The airhead engine produced 67 horsepower and 56 pound-feet of torque. This year, BMW celebrated its 90th anniversary, as well as the 40th anniversary of the R90S. To commemorate the milestone, BMW hired Roland Sands to build a homage to this bike (though in the very distinctive orange paint scheme). This specific BMW R90S (VIN: 4980671) is a stunner, with a recent restoration and fantastic photographs. It’s actually also been repainted, which is dangerous for these bikes – especially the ’75 and ’76 models that have hand painted stripes. The listing goes into phenomenal detail, but extras include a Toaster-Tan upper triple clamp, San Jose fork brace, and…that’s pretty much it. Otherwise it’s dangerously close to stock. I’m constantly wishing I could buy most of the bikes I feature here, but even this one seems to stand out more than usual. If only it had the classic Krauser bags.
