Airbrushed – 1976 BMW R90S

I adore the BMW R90S, which was a game-changer when it was released to the world. The gray and smoke paint scheme shown here was the first of two available paint schemes, both of which are beautiful and incredibly difficult to reproduce. With oversight from Hans Muth, this bike was built to show the world that BMW could make more than just touring bikes for old guys. Reg Pridmore helped soldify that claim with a first place finish in the first ever AMA Superbike Championship series in 1976.

Just 4,984 of the ’76 R90S were built, and only 676 were imported to the states. The airhead engine produced 67 horespoewer and 56 pound-feet of torque. This year, BMW celebrated its 90th anniversary, as well as the 40th anniversary of the R90S. To commemorate the milestone, BMW hired Roland Sands to build a homage to this bike (though in the very distinctive orange paint scheme). This specific BMW R90S is a numbers matching, final-year example. With 43,500 miles on the odo, it had a mechanical refresher done at 41k, including an engine rebuild, lightened flywheel, bigger pistons, dual plug heads, and more. Ignition was upgraded to a Dyna3, plus the suspension was rebuilt..and you even get heated grips. Not bad. You’ll also get Krauser luggage, meaning this bike is ready for nearly everything you’d want to throw at it. What a jewel – if anyone feels like buying me a Christmas present, here’s your hint!
