Post Sale Update: This CB400F sold for $4,550 after a hefty 91 bids on eBay.
I’ve always thought the CB400F was a pleasant mid-sized bike, and the fantastic waterfall headers make it stand out. I’ve featured several over the years and the sale prices manage to surprise me almost every time. There’s over a week left in the bidding for this example but there’s still already been 73 bids…this will be a fun one to follow.
The CB400 was an evolution of the CB350 Four, itself built because Honda found so much success with the CB750 that they decided to offer similar UJMs with a variety of displacements. Motorcycling press liked the bid because it was smooth, quiet, and yielded great gas mileage. But those were the same reasons why American riders instead preferred the Yamaha RD350 or Kawasaki’s 400cc triple. Featuring a relatively rare six-speed transmission, the CB400F was styled somewhat like a cafe racer and had an engine that produced 37 horsepower. Weighing just over 400 pounds, a rider could knock off the quarter mile in about 14.1 seconds. It’s a basic, classic bike that would be just fine serving as a lovely daily rider, even at the age of 40. For more on what made the CB400F appeal to practical-minded riders, check out this article on Motorcycle Classics, which suggests that it might be the best of the CBs.
This bike (VIN: CB400FE-20011769) has 17,727 miles and is said to be entirely original and in excellent condition. Recently, the carbs were rebuilt, the ignition points and timing were checked out, the brake fluid was flushed, an oil change was performed and a new battery was installed. The seller says everything works and he shares a test drive video to back it up:
