Post-Sale Update: This Harley-Davidson FXE Confederate Edition sold for $8,700.
In 1976, Harley released a limited run of bikes called the Liberty Edition to commemorate America’s bicentennial. The next year, they released the Confederate Edition…which celebrated something else? Just 631 units were built across the Harley range – most were Sportsters or Super Glides like this one, but 6 different models got a Confederate version. Here’s a Harley-Davidson FXE Confederate Edition that will need some work, but beggars can’t be choosers with a bike that comes up for sale this infrequently.
This is actually one of the rarest Harleys ever built. No Confederate Editions are shown at Harley’s official museum, presumably due to the lack of political correctness. For more information on the series, check out this article from Motorcycle Classics, which says that only 23 bikes are still accounted for today…
This specific Harley-Davidson FXE Confederate Edition (VIN: 9D31933H7) is a 1200cc Super Glide which came with a 4-speed transmission, chrome front rim, and electric starter. About 9,400 FXEs were sold in 1977, but just 228 were Confederates. The seller says that this is a ‘true barn find’ and that it’s going to need a restoration.
