In Harley’s long history, they’ve only offered one motocross bike – the MX-250 built by Aermacchi. This example has been modified to widen the powerband of the engine, and it’s one of the few examples I’ve seen that’s ready to get dirty or even compete.
Stock, the bike weighed just 233 pounds dry – 25 pounds heavier than the competition. The 242.6cc engine took in gas from a 38mm Dell Orto carb and pushed its 32.4 horsepower through a 5 speed transmission. Most reviewers felt that the Harley-Davidson MX250 was a solid first effort that would become an excellent bike after another year of tweaking. Unfortunately, that additional year never came. This example is impressive as the seller has done a lot of work – his idea was to ‘transform it into a bike that had the engine “personality” of a modern 2 stroke MX.’ The crank was modified to accept a modern rod, which was lengthened, the cylinder was Nikasil plated and converted to accept a reed intake, a piston from a Beta 300 was used, and the head was reshaped. Definitely a situation where you’d have to have a lot of faith in the seller! In addition, the bike was torn down and repainted, all the bushings and bearings were replaced, and the suspension was overhauled – rebuilt forks with Race Tech emulators up front and rebuilt period Works shocks in the rear. Despite all this work, the bike has just 1 hour on it because the seller doesn’t have enough time to enjoy the fruit of his labor.
