In 1978, Honda came out with their first production 6-cylinder bike, the CBX 1000. They had previously built 6 cylinder RC-series racing bikes, competing very successfully in the 60’s in the hands of racers like Mike Hailwood in GP racing and at the Isle of Man.

The CBX was another step up in the 70’s Superbike wars. It put out approx 105 HP, and at the time was the fastest bike available. Reviewers loved the abundant power, and were pleasantly surprised by the decent handling despite the size and width of the engine cases. That width was somewhat ameliorated by stacking the alternator, ignition items and starter above the crankcase, behind the cylinders.

This 1979 CBX is non-original in that it has the front bikini fairing and rear “whale tail” seat unit from a later 1983 CB1100F. It also has a 6-into 1 exhaust. The seller says it has just been gone over by a well-known shop north of Atlanta, with carbs jetted to suit the open exhaust.

The CBX was not cheap at the time, and this one will set you back $7,500 but if 70’s Superbikes are your thing, take a look at this listing here on Craigslist north of Atlanta, Gerogia.
