Every year, retired master tech Kevin Murphy takes decent examples of Honda’s CX platform and restores them. He also takes bad examples and turns them into customs. He’s got an annual tradition of building a Honda CX custom for Daytona Bike Week, and each year a reader sends me a link when he puts up another bike for sale. This year he’s stuffed a CX650 motor into a CX500 frame and created a cafe racer. Here’s his 2016 build, and here’s his 2015 build.
This bike started as a ’80 CX500 frame, and Kevin claims that “everything on this bike is either new or brand new.” Personally, I don’t understand what the difference is, but the work includes a GL650 16″ rear wheel, CB1000 front wheel with custom slotted rotors, Mikuni carbs, lightened flywheel, new timing chain, Hotwing Glass Road race seat, Lithium Ion battery, stainless steel brake lines, Vapor Trail Tech dash, Emgo fairing, and a whole lot more. He’s put 8,000 miles on it so you should have some confidence in the mechanical operations, plus it’s got a fresh oil change and new tires. THe only flaw seems to be a “blemish in the gas tank”.
