Post Sale Update: After being relisted, this BMW sold for $10,000.
I featured an R65 a few days ago that had been modified into a café racer, and remarked how great I thought it was that old, unloved bikes were getting a second lease on life. Here’s another great example. This bike (VIN: WB1044903E6243804) started life as an R100RT. It obviously took someone with a lot of vision to know that converting it into the beauty above was possible.
According to the seller, the bike was built about 18 months ago. The motor is stock but received a little bit of TLC in the process. The only thing that doesn’t work according to the seller is the odometer and trip meter, but I’m not sure that would deter me. The black snowflakes look great, just like the R65’s. However, the thing that really sets this bike apart is the paint. It reminds me somewhat of the paintjob they used to put on the R1100R, but much more dramatic; especially with that matching cowling in the rear. The current owner says that he’s selling because of a bad back. He’s not in a hurry to sell, so if you are looking to buy this bike please be aware it sounds like the price is firm. I remarked in my previous article that I thought this was a trend we might see more of. What’s going to be fascinating going forward is the level of custom touches people are willing to put into these bikes. So far, most of the custom airheads we’ve seen aren’t really all that different than the bikes they started life as. I can only spot a handful of changes this bike has, yet I find it to be absolutely stunning. As more and more bikes start to be customized, I’m curious what we’ll start to see. I think the sky is the limit.
