For the 1987 model year, Honda added some dragster style to the Magna to compensate for the slight displacement reduction due to the ’83 motorcycle tariff (which expired in 1988). In other markets, this generation of the Magna was offered with a 750cc engine, but Americans got a 700cc motor. I’ve featured a couple of these before and both times I had people saying this was either incredibly ugly or a lovely example of 80s styling. What do you think?
The 700cc engine was good for 80 horsepower and 46 lb-ft of torque – the tariff expired the following year and displacement went back to 750cc. The ’87 model was available in two color options – Candy Wave Blue or the Candy Bourgogne Red you see today. A distinctive styling feature was the upswept 4-into-4 exhaust, though they made it rather difficult to mount saddlebags. Also distinctive was the solid rear wheel.
This example (VIN: 1HFRC2100HA306944) has 12,040 miles and the seller has had it for two decades (putting on just 2,500 miles in the process). He notes that it’s stock except for the seat and feels compelled to note that the wheels and the pipes are “straight from the assembly line,” which is fair. There’s a reason I felt obligated to point them out as well!
