Post-Sale Update: This R100GS sold for $4,050 on eBay.
The BMW R100GS was the bike that broke open the mold for BMW. While the R80GS was the first of this new category of bikes, the R100 updated everything and sold over 34,000 units. The best way to sum up this bike would probably be in the words of my mechanic, who calls it a “pavement-indifferent” touring bike.
The flat-twin boxer engine was good for 60 horsepower, pushing the 455 pound bike up to 112 miles per hour. Of course, these bikes were never about top speed, but instead about being a big trailie that could handle most of the terrain you could find. Check out this article from Motorcycle Classics if you want to learn more about this history and success of the R100GS.
This specific BMW R100GS (VIN: wb1047801k6153095) has been with the current owner for 7 years and 14,000 of its 82,000 miles. He refurbished it (mechanically) for a trip to South America that unfortunately never happened – but that means the next owner can enjoy a mechanically solid bike that comes with well thought out extras like a 400W alternator, Jesse bags, Corbin seat from the GSPD, Fiamm horn, and more. It shows cosmetic wear, but this is a 25 year old dual-sport – it should show wear.
