Post-Sale Update: This Yamaha TZR250SP sold for $7,700 after 37 bids on eBay.

Some would say the 3MA version of Yamaha TZR250SP was a full-on racer that came with lights. A limited number were built for homologation purposes, and it even took features from the factory TZ250W racer to make a sportbike that can still take on the newcomers.

Yamaha TZR250SP - Front Left

The base model (2MA) had a 249cc two-stroke reed valve engine produced 50 horsepower at 10,000 rpm. The 3MA got a reverse cylinder design – the carb was in the front, and the exhaust was out of the rear of the cylinders. This in combination with revised timing bumped power up to about 65 horsepower. The even-rarer SP version (Sport Production) got upside down forks, a dry clutch, and some other goodies.

Yamaha TZR250SP - Right Side

This specific Yamaha TZR250SP (VIN: 3MA056007) has 7,653 miles and is been in the US for at least 12 years, the time it’s been with the current seller. It has unfortunately spent the last 5 of those years in storage. With that said, the seller says it still starts after one or two kicks. Despite a shallow dent in the fuel tank and a crack in the left side fairing, this bike still looks pretty good for 24 years old. Plus, I love how the exhaust comes out of the rear cowl.
