Post Sale Update: This 1000S sold for the BIN of $15,000.
In 1990, Moto Guzzi released the 1000S, styled to look like an update of the ’75 750 S3. It sold poorly but the classic styling has held up over the years and unlike the average Guzzi, the resale values for this model are tremendous.
The 949cc v-twin engine produced 82 horsepower at the crank (72 at the rear wheel) and put it through a 5-speed transmission, good for a top speed of 128 miles per hour. For more on this cool classic, check out this site dedicated to the 1000S. Per this PDF from the same site, three versions were built over a 4 year period.. Based on the cockpit, carb, and color scheme, this looks to be a Series 2, of which about 500 were made. Normally Series 2 bikes had spoked wheels, but this has cast wheels from the Series 1 bike. Both the Series 1 and 2 bikes produced 81 horsepower, more than the later bikes did.
This example (VIN: ZGUVVCVV0MM200045) shows 55,100 miles on the odometer. The seller acquired it from a friend with the plan of going through the entire bike. The heads had already been rebuilt but the seller still went through and replaced all the seals, gaskets, hoses, bearings, and other rubber parts. He also replaced the timing chain (and tensioner) and oil pump sprocket. He rebuilt the carbs and noted that the clutch had been replaced at some point. Other work included a rebuilt rear drive, Dyna coils, and a new Dyna ignition. It’s not perfect and it’s not entirely original, but this is a great bike for those of you that want reliable day to day performance with classic styling. The seller will include the original exhaust, seat, and some chrome pieces, as well as a “near new” LaFranconi Competizione exhaust.
